I sometimes smile at the thought of *anyone* ever being able to say 'nothing happens' in the countryside. My smile was particularly large today, as I watched while this Greater Spotted Woodpecker (which has been getting ever bolder over the last few weeks in his visits to the bird feeder) brought his fledgeling for its first visit to the table.
It bobbed about, side to side, poked about in the sunflower seeds, took a tentative stab at the peanut feeder (but could not really figure out how to bypass the squirrel-proof cage) and all the time kept a look out for Dad, who had flown into a nearby tree at the slightest move from me.
This is how you do it!
My hand - and leg - and body - stiffened up as I awaited with my camera to my eye for his return. It was worth it…I was rewarded with a delightful session of 'sharing dinner' with Father! I hope they will be back tomorrow - until then, I'll wait for the bluetits and long-tails to come down for their tea!
