Fossicks? I am not a Scrabble player, and the word is not in common usage here; seems it is an Australian and New Zealand term and originally meant "seeking gold'. I love a new word! It adds texture to your observation.

I looked up fossicks and it said'searching for gold' or 'rummaging,' and gave the example 'she was rummaging in a draw.' I love it when I have to look up a new word and add it to my file of interesting words.

The fog didn't dim his hearing. A wonderful observation - enjoyed your descriptions.
