One of the reasons that we love to visit Hillier's Gardens near Romsey is that from May to October, they stage 'Art in the Garden' - an open air display of numerous artists' works - several of which I fall deeply in love with, and most of which I cannot afford. I have a particular penchant for items made of copper and brass, which look wonderful in the sunlight, especially with droplets of water upon them.
So imagine my surprise - and delight - when I found these 'flower stakes' (which I imagined to be little ornamental copper bird baths) at the local DIY store (Homebase) for just three and five pounds each. Home they came with me, and I was thrilled to bits to possess items which might have been on sale at the Gardens for perhaps forty pounds each…if they had been officially exhibited as 'Art'.
And then I took off the labels…which described them very clearly as 'copper effect finish'. Yes, Gentle Reader…in my haste and enthusiasm, I had not read the label. (Do YOU always read the label? Thought not!!)
But does it matter to me? It does not.
I still love them.
I did not spend a fortune on them.
They are still beautiful.
They still glitter in the sun (especially with raindrops upon them!)
…and when they weather - as weather they will…
I'll jolly well spray them with another colour!
In the meantime, I'll enjoy them immensely, and learn, next time, to read the label.
Journal Prompt:
Have you been taken in by something (or someone) that 'glittered like gold'? What happened when you discovered your mistake? Did you learn anything about yourself that you would not have done had you got what you really thought you were getting?
Do you always read the label? Do the 'labels' we see always tell the whole truth, anyway???
