I'm also remembering two of my own ancestors this weekend. They came back…and so, I am here.
This is George Arthur Silcox - my maternal grandfather
- a Boer War veteran, he re-enlisted, aged 31, in October 1914, becoming a member of the Royal Defence Corps - 'for those too old or unfit for active front line service'. From his military records, however, I have gleaned that he pestered to return to active fighting and in 1918 was once more a Sapper with the Royal Engineers, on his way to France.
and here is Arthur Henry Latham - my paternal Welsh 'Grampy'
- a Royal Welch Fusilier who I think may have been involved in an extraordinary and exhausting march through Mesopotamia and from there to India - he certainly ended up in Bombay, and his regiment was later known to be in Mhow.
My research is ongoing into both these stories…for the stories never end, do they?
